The number of e-waste in Australia is predicted to be approximately 700 million items in 2020 if there is no e-waste recycling program. Sustainable Consumption Survey, Greendex 2010

Conducted by the National Geographic and Globescan, Greendex 2010 surveyed 17,000 consumers in 17 countries worldwide about their opinion in relation to their preference of transport, housing, food, products and the environment impacts of it. According to Greedex survey, Climate change is the second major issue in Australia for the consumers. 98% of households in Australia have at least one computer and that was 5% above the average in the world. This big number of electronics consumption unfortunately does not accompanied by legislation of recycling e-waste. Australia got 11th place and it shows that Australia has no significant improvement since 2008 when the last survey conducted.

Consumer, manufacturer and government’s responsibility to recycle

According to the current law, it is the responsibility of consumers to recycle ewaste since the government has no funding to finance the recycling. It led the consumers to leave the ewaste not recycled and throw it out on landfills. However, according to the Product Stewardship, the responsibility of recycling is going back to the manufacturers to boost the number of ewastes being recycled. Besides, a lot of countries in the world have already legalized similar idea and enforce it even stronger. In Australia, the government is lacking in enforcing the idea.
